CANON POINT After the Fate Episode "Cain, Abel, And..."
HISTORY: (the gbf wiki is sad and sparse when it comes to lore, so)

What canon reveals of Reinhardtzar's past starts when he's a solider in the kingdom of Torhid's army. Belonging to a unit who is described as a bit of a ruffian bunch, he nonetheless serves well and loyally, until he gets wind of the government being rotten to the core and exploiting the subjects. It's revealed later on there's outside machinations causing strife and corruption to spring up, and while it's unclear how Reinhardtzar got wind of this information, before he can act on his knowledge, the kingdom's capital explodes. Literally. The destruction from a pillar of light dubbed "divine retribution" sends the whole skydom into chaos, and eventually creating the two kingdoms of Idelva and Rhem in the aftermath. Reinhardtzar, on the other hand, chooses not to deal with either of them

Instead, he tries to create his own kingdom on an outlying island of Merkmal, and a large chunk of his fellow ex-soldiers follow him there. Even if it's less than orthodox, and not any usual type of government, he manages to create a kind of kingdom of bandits, one that uses the small scattered villages there like any kingdom would, as a source of tax and service in exchange for protection. The kingdom of Idelva, to whom the island technically belongs, doesn't appreciate this when they catch wind of it, and prepare an army to subjugate the uprising. Cain, a general for Idelva's army, goes on ahead to scout. At the same time, the protagonists of the story (the Captain and Lyria and Vyrn) end up on the island after being essentially shipwrecked. Reinhardtzar is curious about them, and their strength, and "invites" them to speak with him. When they refuse, he takes a hostage to force them into coming along with him. Along the way, he explains his ideals, his goal to create a kingdom free of the corruptive rot that tarnished the one he previously served.

He asks Cain and the Captain+Crew to join him, and they refuse. Cain mentions it's not because he disagrees with Reinhardtzar outright, but because what Reinhardztar is doing is essentially declaring war with Idelva--and Rhem, who will come to the aid of the other kingdom simply because it means Idelva owes them. He says he's going to stop Reinhardtzar, and the Captain and their crew agrees to help. They escape from Reinhardtzar's fortress and devise a plan to make sure everyone gets out of this fine. Reinhardtzar devises a plan of his own, and holds an entire village hostage to smoke out Cain and the others hiding on the island.

Cain meets him alone, instead, and as he revealed to the Captain and their crew earlier, he knows that Reinhardtzar isn't freely willing to just let anyone die, as when they first met the hostage he took was a fully grown man, instead of the easier target of said man's daughter. Cain then goes on to say that he's sent the Captain and the others to break the seal on a self-destruct switch for the fortress, a thing built thousands and thousands of years ago in the war with the Astrals, in order to kill the enemies inside and prevent them from using the fortress if there was ever a case of a takeover. Reinhardtzar is conflicted, but ultimately calls Cain's bluff and tells him to pull the trigger, if he himself is so keen on taking lives. Cain hesitates, but before anything else can happen, reinforcements from Idelva--including Cain's sister-in-law Leona--arrive.

A skirmish breaks out, and after seeing Cain stop an Idelvan soldier from killing one of Reinhardtzar's men who had surrendered, Reinhardtzar orders all of his men to drop their weapons. They are captured, and taken to the Idelvan capital for sentencing. But not before Reinhardtzar breaks out of his restraints and takes one last try at taking Cain--the commanding officer and therefore the one to try to kill--down. The captain and crew manage to subdue him, but once they're in the capital Cain begs leniency from the sovereign of the country, because he doesn't like needless death and respects Reinhardtzar's resolve. The leniency is granted, but on the condition that Cain, Leona, the Captiain+crew take Reinhardztar to go subdue a primal beast terrorizing the nearby woods.

During this mission, Cain is captured by the primal beast, and a mysterious young girl named Pholia shows up. Reinhardtzar immediately senses something's amiss with her, but ultimately says that her true identity isn't important, as they still have to complete the mission. Which, as it turns out, is entirely a ruse. Pholia reveals herself to be the sovereign, and the "rampaging primal beast" to be her attendant, BaiZe. She wanted to test the newcomers, and as they pass with flying colors, she tells them she'll help the Captain in finding the rest of their crew, and sends them off to Kluger Island, where a man called the omniscient sage resides. Idelva wants his power to commune with the primal beasts.

Meeting the sage sends many events cascading into motion, most notably the return of two of the Captains crew members and their airship, the Grancypher, and the kingdom of Rhem instigating war via kidnapping the sage and Io, and the sage testing the group to see if they are worthy of learning the "innermost teachings"--the ability to commune with primals in such a way that renders them incapable of being manipulated. The group is sent to Bestia Island where certain members of the Captain's crew are told to learn more about the innermost teachings. There, they meet with Echidna, the primal beast of motherhood. She, too, tests the group's resolve, but during their visit, Rhem's acting commander, Gilbert, comes ashore. Using the powers of the Otherworld (a difficult to describe canon concept, it is both literally "another world" in some cases and also what lies at the "bottom" of the sky, a place called the Crimson Horizon) to send the primal beasts there into a frenzy.

In the chaos that ensues, Reinhardtzar and Cain are knocked off the island by Gilbert, but they are saved by Orchid, Drang, and Strum, members of the Captain's crew who ask them to pass on a message. While they are dropping through the sky, Leona fights Gilbert, but is shaken by information he gives her. This information later comes to fruition later, when Gilbert stages a full assault on Idelva's kingdom, and declares to all who will listen that Pholia is the cause of Torhid's downfall. The kingdom is plunged into confusion, with former Torhid-natives tormented over this knowledge, especially when Pholia says herself that it's all true, and gives herself up to Rhem kingdom in exchange for her country's safety.

The crew, Reinhardtzar, and Cain decided to stage a rescue mission to Rhem, only to find that that kingdom had been thrown into chaos as well because of Gilbert's machinations. He was now no longer acting as a representative of Rhem, or even the True King (a shadowy figure who had been revealed to be pulling many, many of the strings behind the scenes, including the corruption and destruction of Torhid), but only for himself. During their attempt at a rescue, they help the king of Rhem dissolve his contract with the primal beast of the island in order to reach the palace where Pholia is being kept, but they're too late. Gilbert has already grabbed Pholia from her cell and is taking her to an unknown location. After a confrontation with him, they don't manage to take Pholia from him, but they do all learn that he was Cain's brother's--Abel--murderer.

After following Gilbert to the ruins of the former Torhid kingdom capital, they learn his true plans to use Pholia as "fuel" for the Great Wall, the true weapon that destroyed the kingdom years ago. In helping Cain enact his revenge on Gilbert, Reinhardtzar gets knocked off the island, and is believed to be dead by the rest of the group until he's saved by BaiZe and Leona. They manage to get Pholia back from Gilbert, but Gilbert has escaped to the top of the Great Wall, where the True King waits as well. He reveals that the weapon requires both a fuel source and a key--the key being a member of the Torhid royal family.

The remaining member of the family tries to sacrifice himself by fusing with the wall, but the Captain and the rest of the crew manage to defeat the monstrosity he becomes, thus saving him and thwarting the True King's plans, temporarily. Unfortunately, the wall comes crashing down around them, and the Captain, in trying to save someone, gets knocked off the island. The Grancypher crew goes off on the ship to catch them, but it sends them careening to the bottom of the sky, leaving Cain, Reinhardtzar, Leona, and Pholia to worry after them on the island.

PERSONALITY:
Reinhardtzar is, well, if you look up "gap moe" in the dictionary, his picture is right next to it. A funny way to say that his appearance belies the fact he's introverted, intelligent, pragmatic, and levelheaded. He can cut to the quick of people's motivations in sometimes as little as a glance, and no matter how emotionally invested he is in a situation, he manages to take a step back and look at the larger picture, which allows him to almost preternaturally sense when things are off, or someone is being cagey.

His defining moment was the corruption and fall of his former kingdom. As a loyal soldier who saw the destruction and lives lost, it imprinted upon him that authority and rulers are only as good as their actions, not their word. He is incredibly concerned with what it takes to be a leader, what it truly means to be one, and holds himself to an equally high standard as he does everyone else. It's no wonder his men are unfailingly loyal to him--not only does he take their lives into the utmost consideration, going as far to surrender and give up his own dream for their sake, but it's revealed that he goes around the capital to check up on how they're doing even after he ends up in the Idelva army under Cain. Even if he doesn't show it openly--and is, of course, embarrassed at the Captain tagging along with him on his rounds--he cares deeply for those who he considers comrades in arms.

That said, no matter how much he cares, no matter how much his own feelings might be in turmoil in a situation, he's not one to jump to conclusions or rash action. In fact, even when it was revealed that Torhid's demise was orchestrated by Idelva's sovereign, and near everyone else was in some state of panic or despair, he was thinking about how all the pieces of information came together, and ultimately how they didn't fit. Even if he had every reason to be angry and resentful, the most important thing to him then was the truth of the matter, because without it, no one could act or decide a single thing properly. He takes risks when there's no other way, such as saving Cain and Vyrn from a blow that knocked him off the island, or when stopping Leona from attacking the sage who was testing Cain in a battle, but is otherwise methodical and pragmatic in his methods. That said, he is a man of action, and will eventually come to a decision of what to do. He doesn't mull over anything longer than he needs to, he simply doesn't jump into the pool without checking to see there's water there first.

That pragmatism leads him to be very straightforward in his methods, and as such, those like Cain who are risk takers and idealists rub him the wrong way. He's a little cynical from his experiences, and it shows in the way that he doesn't take anyone or anything at face value upon first meeting. And in the way he meets optimism with barefaced realism. When Cain speaks of a kingdom being a place where people can live in peace smiling, Reinhardtzar asks him what kind of ruler he has to be to make that happen, and Cain doesn't have an answer. Reinhardtzar takes no pleasure in the less glamorous realities and truths, like how with power comes fear from those without it, and how rulers might wield such things, but he nonetheless faces and acknowledges them. Even still, he's open to hearing out those who are of different minds than him--to follow the previous example, he ends his speech with telling Cain that if the other ever does come up with an answer to tell him. He's curious.

All in all, he's an observant, honest, steadfast person who cares for those he sees as his responsibility, and one who prefers deliberation always followed by action--a true king, as said by one of his former "subjects."

Oh, and he likes cooking and sweets and is a total homebody. Weekends spent reading quietly. Gap moe, like I said.

CANON POWERS:
Torhid soldiers underwent a kind of experimentation that gives them increased strength, reflexes, and defenses. It has its downsides that when activated, it can drain their energy/life force/canon is REALLY unclear, but is extremely powerful. Reinhardtzar said himself that Torhid was attempting to create super soldiers that could take on entire armies with singlehandedly.

OTHER: He's really, really, really strong even without activating his super berserker state, just as a note. He broke out of chains by himself without using it, to give you an idea.

MAGIC ABILITY: Lie detection. He can tell if someone is lying and how many lies they've told him, but he can't tell what, precisely the lies are. The "counter" appears as roman numerals floating above someone's head. Only he can see it. It does work with text, but a lot worse. He can probably only tell if someone is lying or not via written communication until he gets better at his ability. In addition, the power fades the longer since something has been said or written down. Ie, if someone sends him a text and he doesn't read it for a day or so, he might not be able to tell if they're lying. This too will improve slightly with practice!
